about

Sonata - the word, in thought, use and meaning.

Curiouser and Curiouser, Alice would have said. When is a Study a Sonata, and vice versa, answer, when it is neither, quipped the queen of hearts. First let us draw a distinction between Sonata Form and that of the Sonata itself. Sonata form is a common Formal plan for the harmonic Cycle, of a movement, most notably the first, in large scale works of abstracted of instrumental music. How many different things have been Called a symphony in the Modern era, and how many movements must they have, Five, seven, One ? And yet are they not still symphonies ? And yet what defines them as such ? Hans Werner Henze’s 4th or 6th are Symphonies, they echo for him the pure notion, of a vessel, for the highest thought in instrumental music. In the modern ‘Sonata’ we have then, in parallel, a display piece, for that named instrument, be it here a Drum. So ‘Sonata,’ is a word we can reserve for our special efforts in a genera, be it here, in that for a Drum. And who shall decide when I can use this noble fiction ? Surely I must judge for myself, when I have crossed that invisible line, judge me on that truly, when arbiters words are Humpty’s own.
