Drum Study no. 7 [W] - Rh 390

from W Dances 8 - 14 by Julian Broadhurst Drum Music

about

Drum music, Dm 16 - 'W Dances 8 - 14'. A second album dedicated to the W Studio music, a third of four containing it. it opens with two further members of the Drum Studies [W] series, a group collecting studies for drum, as opposed to material for Dance rehearsal. The six on Dm 15 were recorded together, except for the first, some time before,, and these two here, 7 & 8, sometime after, hence the catalogue sequence, Confused, don't be - just enjoy ! Everything fits around these.

To the main business of the disc The W Dances - Created for Joanna Leah [Geldard] Dancer Choreographer with whom I was working to Choreograph my Beriom 10 in a two year Collaboration we called Etuda, after a piece of mine. We had failed to get funding for the huge amount of work involved so we set about creating some smaller pieces on our own and so the W Dances gave a musical background, input to her Movement. The Dances take the names of some of the parts of the studio that became apparatus for the work. The first five are on the Album Dm 15, and here on 16 they continue from 8 to 14. The W dances nos. 6 and 7 are for violin, indeed at these sessions where I spent far more time working on my own than I did with Joanna, recording works for Violin Cello and even viola. These are documented in my MSEP [ music for strings, electronics and percussion] Albums. It was a complex, brilliantly creative time where so much was achieved including two Etuda albums for Joanna and I. Joanna is a successful Architectural Artist and still occasionally dances, and has recently gained her Doctorate.

The last piece on the disc Fretwork Rh - 409 a little solo number for that wooden pole to hand in the Space I had used in the Drum Sonata no. 9 to punctuate the piece - here a little solo of its own.
