."It had been an old party trick of mine to play a drum against a metrognome, and for listeners to perceive the Metrognome go out of phase with me, as I became the new metrognomic, that which sets the pace we judge to be the beat. I decided to try to scale this up to some decent sized works. As it happens I collect metrognomes, especially big ones with a loud tick and now post Ligeti it's almost 'obligatory'. So listen now as the metrognomes go out of phase with me - speed up and slow down as I phase in and out with them. Oddly it isn't Phase music, Phm, by my definition, because each piece is a single live take. There are no studio tricks here - just the metrognome and I".
